The World’s Ugliest Dog is Gus, a Chinese Crested purebred with three legs and one eye. Gus is a cancer survivor and was awarded the title at the 20th annual World’s Ugliest Dog competition at the Sonoma-Marin County Fair in Petaluma, CA. His owners, Jeanenne and Janey Teed from St. Petersburg, Florida, received the award.

Thirteen dogs competed for the title, including past winners and new contestants. Karen Quigley, owner of Elwood, the 2007 winner, noted the tough competition. Elwood, who became a spokesdog for homeless pets after his win, is featured in a children’s book promoting acceptance of differences.

Past winners have gained fame, appearing on popular American talk shows. This year, Gus and his family aim to spread awareness about cancer survival and early detection. Gus was diagnosed with skin cancer 18 months ago, resulting in the loss of a leg and an eye, and costly medical bills.

Jeanenne Teed hopes for financial help to cover Gus’s ongoing treatment. Several contestants were rescued from euthanasia, like Elwood and the 2006 winner, Archie. Their owners have shared inspiring stories of adopting and loving these unique dogs.

This year, Elwood received the Munchkin’s Congeniality Award. Gus, the new champion, took home $1,000 and two large trophies. Jeanenne Teed expressed their determination to participate and optimism for the future.
